The David Benton Chapter SAR met Thursday at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. The speaker was President Jerry Brown who told how the American Jewish people influenced the outcome of the Revolutionary War by their finiacial support and participation. Past President Jim Harey received the Past President's Pin and Award.

 June 10, 2010
President Jerry Brown accepts records information from Charlotte Sellers of the Seymour Library who presented a program about "The Status of Jackson County Records" at the June meeting of the David Benton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution at the Brownstown Dairy Queen.

Below Darrell Scifres, David Bentor Treasurer, presents the David Benton SAR Law Enforcement Award to Lt. Mike Nichols of the Scottsburg Police Department for his achievement.

 April 8, 2010
The April meeting of the David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution was held at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. At the meeting, (above), a Bronze award for service was presented to Darrell Scifres by District Director James Arnold. The program was by President Jerry Brown, (below), based on the so called last battle of the Revolution at Rice's Fort in 1782. The Indians, supported by the British, were defeated in a bloody battle by the pioneer settlers defending their meager fort. Several of the victors were ancestors of Jerry Brown.

The March meeting of the David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution featured several awards. The one above was given to Tammy Trueblood for being the outstanding EMT for the year award. The picture below shows War Service Awards presented to David Benton members for their past service to their country during the war. In the photo showing their awards received are Wilbur Lon Harvey, Billy Day and Glenn Killey.

The February meeting of the David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution was held at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. A brief business meeting was discussed and since there were no awards available the ceremony for Army recognition was postphoned till the next meeting.

 January 14, 2010
The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution met in January at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. In the photo is District Director James C. Arnold of Ellettsville, guest speaker from the Gurthie Chapter of the SAR. He displayed a table in honor of M.I.A. and P.O.W. soldiers. A vacant chair represented the unknown soldier. He had various officers place a red, yellow and white rose in a vase to honor the soldiers. Below are the newly installed officers of the David Benton Chapter for 2010. From left is Vice-President Glen Killey, President Jerry Brown, Secretary John Sheets, Treasurer Darrell Scifries and Jim Arnold installing.

At the December meeting of the David Benton Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, the guests were Deb, Kyle and Kevin McCauley. Kyle (above) is an Eagle Scout with troop 1228. He is this year's choice from the David Benton Chapter to enter the Sons of the American Revolution Eagle Scout Award contest at the state level.

Speaker for this November 12th meeting was Eagle Scout Kyle McCauley son of Mr. & Mrs. Kevin McCauley of Seymour. Kyle is a direct descendant of Revolutionary War soldier Timothy Brigham of Massachusetts. Kyle will be writing his essay on his patriot ancestor and read it at the December meeting. Also with Kyle in the photo is Chapter Secretary John Sheets.
 Also, at this meeting in the photo is Rev. Sam Allman and wife Brenda, who were speakers to kick off the Louisville Veteran's Hospital Christmas Gift Drive. Sam is the Pastor of the Full Gospel Apostolic Tabernacle in Brownstown.The church has been one of the largest donors in the past few years.

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution met Thursday at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. There was no speaker for this meeting. The regular agenda for the meetings was followed by President Jim Harvey. Decisions were made about the upcoming drive thru December for clothing and supplies for veterans at the VA Hospital in Louisville. Locations were these items could be collected were decided and a flyer was designed to be posted and distributed to various groups interested in supporting this effort. Plans were made for attending the state INSSAR Fall Meeting in Muncie Oct. 17th.

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution met in September at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. In the photo is fire chief Charles Densford of the Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department. He is receiving a certificate and medal from Treasurer Darrell Scifres honoring him as the Fireman of the Year by the David Benton SAR. Also, below is a photo of member Jerry Brown with his flag display of 48 flags used during the Revolutionary War and other times. He also read a poem entitled "I am America's Heritage" by Thomas E. Wicks Sr.

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution had their Tenth Anniversary meeting with a dinner at the Dairy Queen. Invited guests included members from the John Hay Chapter in Salem and the Daniel Gurthrie Chapter in Bedford. The guest speaker form the Daniel Gurthrie Chapter was Doug Hill who brought his outstanding collection of antique medical tools and named each and told how they would have been used. It was so interesting that he had to answer many questions concerning the tools.

Here is a picture from the grave marking, the David Benton chapter SAE, the Daniel Guthrie Chapter SAR the Genral Charles Scott Chapter DAR and Richard Lord Jones Society CAR plus the Indiana State Sons Of The American Revolution color Guard took part. There were between 60-70 people in attendance. The picture is of the 20 people who were related to Jacob Young in attendance. |

| About the SAR |
|
| The objects of the Sons of the American
Revolution are to perpetuate the memory of the people and events of
the American Revolution, to maintain the institutions of American
Freedom, and to promote fellowship among the descendants of
Revolutionary War Patriots.
Some of the notable activities of the Sons of the American
Revolution include:
- Arrange with local high schools for their participation in the
Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest.
- Arrange with local high school authorities for participation
by students who are in their junior or Senior year in the George
S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest.
- Place and dedicate SAR bonze markers at the graves of members
and/or Revolutionary War verterans.
- Furnish capable and interesting speakers to schools,
organizations, public meetings, and other similar events and
gatherings.
- Sponsor or participate in celebrations of historic events and
national holidays.
Our chapter conducts many more
activities than these listed, but this list has been kept short for
sake of brevity. |

| Membership Qualifications |
|
Any male shall be eligible for
membership in the Society who, is a citizen of good repute in the
community, is the lineal descendant of an ancestor who was at all
times unfailing in loyalty to, and rendered active service in the
cause of American Independence either as an officer, soldier,
seaman, marine, militiamen or minuteman, in the armed forces of the
Continental Congress, or those of any one of the several Colonies or
States, as a signer of the Declaration of Independence, as a member
of a Committee of Safety or Correspondence, as a member of any
Continental, Provincial, or Colonial Congress or Legislature, as a
foreign national of, but not limited to, France, Poland, Spain,
Sweden, Switzerland or Germany who came to North America and
rendered service in the cause of American Independence or as a
recognized patriot who performed actual service by overt acts of
resistance to the authority of Great Britain, provided, however,
that no person advocating the overthrow of the Government of the
United States by use of force or violence shall be eligible for
membership in the Society.

The Sons of the American Revolution is a non-profit, United States
501(c)3, corporation devoted to historical and educational preservation
of
American revolutionary heritage. As a patriotic lineage society, the
organization is comprised of the male descendants of patriots who
supported the cause of American Independence during the years
1774-1783.

DAVID BENTON OBITS:
SCOTTSBURG,IN: THOMAS BENJAMIN EVERITT 85, died in a house fire Saturday, December 13, 2008. He was owner of the old Scott County Concrete Products and the old Airlite Perlite Processing Companies. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, member of the David Benton Sons of the American Revolution, Moose Family Center #2324 and the American Legion Post # 234. Survivors include wife, Frances K. (Allen) Everitt; two sons, Thomas F. (Diann) and Benjamin A. (Janet) Everitt; two daughters, Kathleen Jones and Eve D. (Dale) Hickey; and eight grandchildren. Funeral service was at Collins Funeral Home with burial in the Everitt Family Cemetery.
