David Benton Memorial Service

August 8, 1998

Fairview Cemetary, Brownstown, Indiana

The Memorial Service and Family Reunion for the descendants of David Benton, a Revolutionary War Patriot was held in Jackson County, Indiana on August 8, 1998 with the family reunion held afterwards at the State Forest.

The Clarence Cook Chapter Colorguard, particpated in this event that was organized mostly by Richard Benton. One descedant of many of those present was Carl Greger Mitton. Mr Mitton talked about the hardships and sacrifices that he endured and was a prisoner of war aboard a ship and had it sunk surely he would have died below deck and then his descendants would not have been exactly the same as they are.

Carl Gregor on his bagpipes played, "Amazing Grace", "Going Home" and "Taps".

During the ceremony their was something that I had never seen done was the distribution of the ancestral soil. They went back four generations beyond David and gathered a sampling of the soil from his ancestors from each of their grave sites Symboling the bringing together of the family.

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust we are who we are this is what becomes of us. This was a heart warming ceremony bringing togetherness of the family and all that attended this ceremony. Through the ages of time, these viles of dirt you could surely see the variations of dirt from their final resting place.
