The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution had their Tenth Anniversary meeting with a dinner at the Dairy Queen. Invited guests included members from the John Hay Chapter in Salem and the Daniel Gurthrie Chapter in Bedford. The guest speaker form the Daniel Gurthrie Chapter was Doug Hill who brought his outstanding collection of antique medical tools and named each and told how they would have been used. It was so interesting that he had to answer many questions concerning the tools. |

SAR President Jim Harvey presents the Indiana Service Award to member John Sheets for his meritorious service representing the David Benton S.A.R. Chapter.![]() Awards were presented to Fire and Rescue volunteers Joe Barnes, Bill Drees and Fred Johnson from Medora, for their efforts in rushing to the aide of member John Sheets who suffered from a fall on the ice last winter. |

| SAR President Jim Harvey was the speaker for the David Benton Meeting on February 12th. Jim reviewed the life of Nathaniel Greene, a Major General in the Revolutionary WAr, born August 7, 1742 in Potowomutnear Warwick, RI. He was self-educated and was at the beginning of the war a militia private, the lowest rank possible and he emerged from the war with a reputation as George Washington's most gifted and dependable officer. He was the only general serving all eight years with George Washington. At the urgent request of Washington on March 2, 1778, at Valley Forge, he accepted the office of Quartermaster General. He lost many battles but in his lost to Corwallis at Cowpens in 1781, caused Cornwallis troops to be so diminished in size that General Washington was able to defeat him at Yorktown, ending the war. Green died of a heatstroke in 1786 at age 44 and was buried at his estate "Mulberry Grove," 14 miles above Savannah. |

| SAR member Jerry Brown was the speaker for the David Benton Meeting on January 8th. His message was on the early pioneer family Jesse and Nancy Payton Tuell who came to Jackson County about 1811. Jesse's father John Tuell was one of the founders of Louisville having come down river with George Rogers Clark and his army in 1778. Jerry's was related to Jesse Tuell by being a descendant of his Uncle Charles Tuell. Also, Nancy Payton Tuell was a sister the Jerry's Rev. War ancestor Louis Payton. Jesse Tuell's family was one of the first eight log cabins in Jackson County. |

| SAR Chaplin Rev. Larrry Mallett was the speaker for the Thursday David Benton Meeting. He told about the Battle of Trenton took place on December 26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War after General George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River north of Trenton, New Jersey. The hazardous crossing in adverse weather allowed Washington to lead the main body of the Continental Army against Hessian soldiers garrisoned at Trenton and to defeat them. Despite the battle's small numbers, its effect was enormous throughout the colonies. The revolution itself had been in doubt only a week earlier, and the army seemed on the verge of collapse. However, with this victory, soldiers agreed to stay and new recruits came and joined the ranks. |

| SAR member Jerry Brown was the speaker for the David Benton Meeting on Thursday. He told of the place John Tipton played in the early history of Indiana and especially in this area. Tipton basically defeated the Indians in the area and made it safe for the pioneers. He founded the town of Tiptonia which became Columbus. His father Joshua Tipton and his mother's father Robert Shields were both Revolutionary WAr soldiers. Above he receives thanks for his program from President Jim Harvey. |

| SAR Secretary John Sheets was the featured speaker for the David Benton Meeting on Thursday. He Spoke of the Lincoln family and the life and background of Revolutionary War soldier Abraham Lincoln 1744-1786, who was the grandfather of President Lincoln. |

| President Jim Harvey and Secretary John Sheets present a gift to guest speaker Terry English an attorney and member from the Gurthie Chapter of the SAR. Terry told the group about his ancestor John Trumbull who was honored for his four paintings of the American Revolution that adorn the Capitol Rotunda. He distributed several handouts about the life of John Trumbull and showed a copy of one of his historic paintings. |

| President Jim Harvey presents SAR certificates to be posted at the Libraries in Crothersville and Medora, to Roger and Becky Brewer at the May meeting of the David Benton chapter of the SAR. Roger spoke about his time in the military and how he was proud of his service. Becky told how as Oakley Allen's daughter, she was proud of the service he did for his country and that she was interested in her genealogy line and would try to find more about her ancestors. |

| Darrell Scifres presents award to Jason Bagwell, a History teacher from Scottsburg High School. Jason presented a program about his work in the schools with Revolutionary and Civil War studies and explained about some of the field trips he had made with students to Pigeon Roost and other historic areas of Indiana. |
