November 11, 2010

The David Benton Chapter SAR met at the Medora Library. The speaker was Jerry Brown who read an Iwo Jima Momument story in honor of Veterans Day.The group made plans to collect items for Christmas for the veterans at the VA Hospital in Louisville. Also, plans were made to visit other chapter's meetings in the near future. Reports were also received from those attending the INSSAR meeting on October 30th.

The David Benton Chapter SAR met at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. The speaker was Keith Boling of the Veterans Administration who updated us on his position and the ongoing work of the local Veterans administration and how they can help local veterans needing assistance.

The David Benton Chapter SAR met Thursday at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. The speaker was Secretary John Sheets who's talk was "Who Served Here? which was about the life and times of Benedict Arnold form success to failure.


August 12, 2010

The David Benton Chapter SAR met Thursday at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. Honored with the Outstanding Citizenship Award was Hershel Forgey who also spoke on the placement of flags on the veterans graves and especially those of Revolutionary War veterans. Then he told of the early history and settlements in Jackson County.


Below is 4-H Leader Joy Soladine who was honored with the Good Citizenahip Bronze Medal for her more than 20 year work in 4-H for the community.With her is her daughter.

The David Benton Chapter SAR met Thursday at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. The speaker was President Jerry Brown who told how the American Jewish people influenced the outcome of the Revolutionary War by their finiacial support and participation. Past President Jim Harey received the Past President's Pin and Award.





June 10, 2010

President Jerry Brown accepts records information from Charlotte Sellers of the Seymour Library who presented a program about "The Status of Jackson County Records" at the June meeting of the David Benton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution at the Brownstown Dairy Queen.

April 8, 2010

The April meeting of the David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution was held at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. At the meeting, (above), a Bronze award for service was presented to Darrell Scifres by District Director James Arnold. The program was by President Jerry Brown, (below), based on the so called last battle of the Revolution at Rice's Fort in 1782. The Indians, supported by the British, were defeated in a bloody battle by the pioneer settlers defending their meager fort. Several of the victors were ancestors of Jerry Brown.

The March meeting of the David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution featured several awards. The one above was given to Tammy Trueblood for being the outstanding EMT for the year award. The picture below shows War Service Awards presented to David Benton members for their past service to their country during the war. In the photo showing their awards received are Wilbur Lon Harvey, Billy Day and Glenn Killey.

The February meeting of the David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution was held at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. A brief business meeting was discussed and since there were no awards available the ceremony for Army recognition was postphoned till the next meeting.




January 14, 2010

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution met in January at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. In the photo is District Director James C. Arnold of Ellettsville, guest speaker from the Gurthie Chapter of the SAR. He displayed a table in honor of M.I.A. and P.O.W. soldiers. A vacant chair represented the unknown soldier. He had various officers place a red, yellow and white rose in a vase to honor the soldiers. Below are the newly installed officers of the David Benton Chapter for 2010. From left is Vice-President Glen Killey, President Jerry Brown, Secretary John Sheets, Treasurer Darrell Scifries and Jim Arnold installing.



December 10, 2009
At the December meeting of the David Benton Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, the guests were Deb, Kyle and Kevin McCauley. Kyle (above) is an Eagle Scout with troop 1228. He is this year's choice from the David Benton Chapter to enter the Sons of the American Revolution Eagle Scout Award contest at the state level.


November 12, 2009

Speaker for this November 12th meeting was Eagle Scout Kyle McCauley son of Mr. & Mrs. Kevin McCauley of Seymour. Kyle is a direct descendant of Revolutionary War soldier Timothy Brigham of Massachusetts. Kyle will be writing his essay on his patriot ancestor and read it at the December meeting. Also with Kyle in the photo is Chapter Secretary John Sheets.


Also, at this meeting in the photo is Rev. Sam Allman and wife Brenda, who were speakers to kick off the Louisville Veteran's Hospital Christmas Gift Drive. Sam is the Pastor of the Full Gospel Apostolic Tabernacle in Brownstown.The church has been one of the largest donors in the past few years.

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution met Thursday at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. There was no speaker for this meeting. The regular agenda for the meetings was followed by President Jim Harvey. Decisions were made about the upcoming drive thru December for clothing and supplies for veterans at the VA Hospital in Louisville. Locations were these items could be collected were decided and a flyer was designed to be posted and distributed to various groups interested in supporting this effort. Plans were made for attending the state INSSAR Fall Meeting in Muncie Oct. 17th.

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution met in September at the Brownstown Dairy Queen. In the photo is fire chief Charles Densford of the Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department. He is receiving a certificate and medal from Treasurer Darrell Scifres honoring him as the Fireman of the Year by the David Benton SAR. Also, below is a photo of member Jerry Brown with his flag display of 48 flags used during the Revolutionary War and other times. He also read a poem entitled "I am America's Heritage" by Thomas E. Wicks Sr.

The David Benton Chapter Sons of The American Revolution had their Tenth Anniversary meeting with a dinner at the Dairy Queen. Invited guests included members from the John Hay Chapter in Salem and the Daniel Gurthrie Chapter in Bedford. The guest speaker form the Daniel Gurthrie Chapter was Doug Hill who brought his outstanding collection of antique medical tools and named each and told how they would have been used. It was so interesting that he had to answer many questions concerning the tools.

Compatriot James C. Arnold, the Daniel Guthrie Secretary, presents an SAR Flag Award Certificate to Paul and Debbie Jones on behalf of the David Benton Chapter for their efforts in displaying the flag on a regular basis. President Jim Harvey is on the right.

SAR President Jim Harvey presents the Indiana Service Award to member John Sheets for his meritorious service representing the David Benton S.A.R. Chapter.

Awards were presented to Fire and Rescue volunteers Joe Barnes, Bill Drees and Fred Johnson from Medora, for their efforts in rushing to the aide of member John Sheets who suffered from a fall on the ice last winter.

SAR President Jim Harvey was the speaker for the David Benton Meeting on February 12th. Jim reviewed the life of Nathaniel Greene, a Major General in the Revolutionary WAr, born August 7, 1742 in Potowomutnear Warwick, RI. He was self-educated and was at the beginning of the war a militia private, the lowest rank possible and he emerged from the war with a reputation as George Washington's most gifted and dependable officer. He was the only general serving all eight years with George Washington. At the urgent request of Washington on March 2, 1778, at Valley Forge, he accepted the office of Quartermaster General. He lost many battles but in his lost to Corwallis at Cowpens in 1781, caused Cornwallis troops to be so diminished in size that General Washington was able to defeat him at Yorktown, ending the war. Green died of a heatstroke in 1786 at age 44 and was buried at his estate "Mulberry Grove," 14 miles above Savannah.

SAR member Jerry Brown was the speaker for the David Benton Meeting on January 8th. His message was on the early pioneer family Jesse and Nancy Payton Tuell who came to Jackson County about 1811. Jesse's father John Tuell was one of the founders of Louisville having come down river with George Rogers Clark and his army in 1778. Jerry's was related to Jesse Tuell by being a descendant of his Uncle Charles Tuell. Also, Nancy Payton Tuell was a sister the Jerry's Rev. War ancestor Louis Payton. Jesse Tuell's family was one of the first eight log cabins in Jackson County.

SAR Chaplin Rev. Larrry Mallett was the speaker for the Thursday David Benton Meeting. He told about the Battle of Trenton took place on December 26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War after General George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River north of Trenton, New Jersey. The hazardous crossing in adverse weather allowed Washington to lead the main body of the Continental Army against Hessian soldiers garrisoned at Trenton and to defeat them. Despite the battle's small numbers, its effect was enormous throughout the colonies. The revolution itself had been in doubt only a week earlier, and the army seemed on the verge of collapse. However, with this victory, soldiers agreed to stay and new recruits came and joined the ranks.

SAR member Jerry Brown was the speaker for the David Benton Meeting on Thursday. He told of the place John Tipton played in the early history of Indiana and especially in this area. Tipton basically defeated the Indians in the area and made it safe for the pioneers. He founded the town of Tiptonia which became Columbus. His father Joshua Tipton and his mother's father Robert Shields were both Revolutionary WAr soldiers. Above he receives thanks for his program from President Jim Harvey.

SAR Secretary John Sheets was the featured speaker for the David Benton Meeting on Thursday. He Spoke of the Lincoln family and the life and background of Revolutionary War soldier Abraham Lincoln 1744-1786, who was the grandfather of President Lincoln.

President Jim Harvey and Secretary John Sheets present a gift to guest speaker Terry English an attorney and member from the Gurthie Chapter of the SAR. Terry told the group about his ancestor John Trumbull who was honored for his four paintings of the American Revolution that adorn the Capitol Rotunda. He distributed several handouts about the life of John Trumbull and showed a copy of one of his historic paintings.

President Jim Harvey presents SAR certificates to be posted at the Libraries in Crothersville and Medora, to Roger and Becky Brewer at the May meeting of the David Benton chapter of the SAR. Roger spoke about his time in the military and how he was proud of his service. Becky told how as Oakley Allen's daughter, she was proud of the service he did for his country and that she was interested in her genealogy line and would try to find more about her ancestors.

Darrell Scifres presents award to Jason Bagwell, a History teacher from Scottsburg High School. Jason presented a program about his work in the schools with Revolutionary and Civil War studies and explained about some of the field trips he had made with students to Pigeon Roost and other historic areas of Indiana.
